Meet Oona Flanagan, SAP FI/CO Accounting Instructor

Oona Flanagan is a qualified accountant and worked in accountancy for about 20 years until the year 2000, when she did a 5-week SAP FI/CO Academy course during her first SAP implementation with Unilever Poland - and she hasn’t looked back since.

Meet Oona Flanagan, SAP FI/CO Accounting Instructor

Who Are You? Why Enrol In Your Courses?

I’ve always loved languages and travelling, and have spent 20 years on a number of SAP implementation rollouts throughout Europe and North America, and even travelled as far as Sao Paolo and Shanghai to train some key-users there.

During those 20 years, I worked in various different industries, including pharma, fashion, food, beverages, consumer goods, media, packaging, shipping containers, banking, and transportation and had an amazing time exploring the different countries and cultures.

Writing books and creating online courses seems a natural follow on

Although I enjoyed all the different aspects of implementation work, from design to post go-live support, I also enjoyed the training very much and creating documentation, so writing books and creating online courses seemed a natural follow on.

What market do you serve or target?

I first started working with SAP S/4HANA in 2005 and am one of its greatest fans, so my training is directed to anybody interested in S/4HANA Finance with a little bit of Management Accounting/Controlling as well. I love the many improvements in Finance and Controlling, and although initially I wasn’t too impressed with Fiori, now I use it all the time in my courses.

What is the biggest benefit of enrolling in your courses or reading your books?

I like to explain the whole concept from an accounting point of view and to clarify when and how to use each transaction, the impact of using different variables and so on as well as doing lots of demonstrations. Much of my content starts at a beginner level, but often has more advanced information as you progress, and I love including a tips and tricks section.

I love including a tips and tricks section

At the moment there is very little content out there specifically for Fiori apps and what is there, is not very comprehensive. There are tutorials which demonstrate the app but don’t explain the fields or when and why to use the transaction, or you have training courses which explain the concept but not the detail, so I think my courses fill that gap.

I can sometimes spend days with just one Fiori app finding out everything you can and cannot do with it and then pass on the tips and tricks I have found.

How did you get into the content creation market?

I was initially approached in 2015 by SAP Press, and asked if I would be interested in writing a book, and not long after that was approached by other organizations regarding webinars, online courses and more books.

I have now written a total of five e-books

Two of which were printed and are available on Amazon. Creating my first video course with Michael Management was particularly challenging as it took a while to get used to the new tools for the video, particularly getting the right microphone and audio quality right, although hopefully I have got a lot better at it now.

Why did you decide to create that content?

I have always loved books, and the idea of becoming an author and seeing my name in print was particularly exciting, but I also love making the videos, especially recording the demonstrations although I am very shy about showing myself in videos! Being an accountant, it seemed logical to create financial content and there are so many new areas to explore in S/4HANA that I think I have plenty to keep me going.

As I don’t have my own web-site, I find LinkedIn very useful to inform users of new content or conferences that I am presenting at. If anybody wants to get in touch the link is:

A number of students have connected with me on LinkedIn in connection with my courses or the conferences I have presented at, and we have had some interesting discussions about S/4HANA.

What advice do you have for new students?

Even after more than 20 years working with SAP, I still learn something new almost every week and try to pass it on to my students.

Don’t be scared of S/4HANA

Don’t be scared of S/4HANA, it’s really great once you get to know it! And please try Fiori if you haven’t already, as there is a lot of very useful functionality to it that you might not spot at first glance.
